My Little Fishies

The kids finished swim lessons yesterday and I am so proud of them!! I thought going 4x/week for 2 weeks would get old, but they didn't complain once. They loved loved loved going to swim lessons, and I am so thankful they enjoyed their teachers and learned so much.

Greg wanted to come watch the last lesson, so he surprised the kids and met us there Friday. They were so excited!! (Maybe a little too excited.....they were a bit distracted during the lesson and didn't do as well as they had in previous days. Oh well. Greg was just happy to see them in action.)

Getting a pep talk from Daddy
The kids wanted to me to take videos so they could watch themselves swim at home, ha! Of course I obliged and took lots of them. Don't feel like you have to watch each video, but they are all super short if you do :)

ABBY
  •  Loved to jump in "with no hands" (from the instructor) and make a big splash
  • Perfected the art of floating on her back - aka "Starfish"
  • Had no fear by the end of the lessons and even swam a few times by herself (for a foot or so)
  • Started taking the lead from others in her class and would goof off while waiting her turn on the platform. Namely, 1) putting her head underwater and blowing bubbles, and 2) hanging on the edge of the platform and kicking her legs to see how much she could splash everyone!

Here she is, doing a little bit of swimming and finishing off with a big jump!

Not her best attempt, but here is her "Starfish"

Using the kickboard and attempting to learn to breathe

No fear! Look at our fishie!

NATE
  • Learned to hold his breath underwater! His record was 14 seconds.
  • Got more adventurous each lesson. In between his turns, he would dunk himself and try to touch the bottom of the platform. Made me nervous to watch!
  • By the last lesson, was telling the instructor "Don't touch me! I can do it!" :)
  • His stroke technique improved tremendously throughout the two weeks. He is getting really good at doing "big arms." He just needs to work on the breathing still.
  • His biggest accomplishment was jumping in, and swimming to the platform with no help. We're talking 10-12 feet, people! I am proud to say he is no longer fearful of the water, and nothing makes me happier!!

Here's one of his "monster" jumps
And the underwater rocket
Floating on his belly/holding his breath
Big accomplishment!!

**I've had a few people tell me they cannot view the videos. If this is the case, please leave a comment and let me know so I can look into putting them on YouTube. Thanks!

  1. Great post! Colin is taking swimming lessons right now and has one more we left. I'm not expecting him to be able to do much swimming when he's done (just a pre school class), but I am overly excited about the fact that he doesn't scream when I wash his hair now! He is not into water in his face and I am hoping this class gets him over that. =)

Also loved your pool day post. I wish we had a pool near with a lazy river. You have found such a great community!

  2. And that should have said "week" not "we." My keyboard wouldn't type when I tried to fix it. Who knows...
